Spondylitis can cause back and neck pain, with symptoms like Cervical Spondylosis (wear-and-tear of neck discs and bones) leading to stiff, painful necks that may radiate to the shoulders and arms, and Ankylosing Spondylitis (an inflammatory type of arthritis) causing pain and stiffness, especially in the lower back and hips, that improves with movement and worsens at rest. Treatment involves pain management with medications, physical therapy to maintain mobility and strength, and behavior changes to improve posture.

Types of Spondylitis

  • Ankylosing Spondylitis: An inflammatory arthritis that primarily affects the spine, causing inflammation and stiffness in the back, rib cage, and neck, often starting in the lower back and hips.
  • Cervical Spondylosis: A type of arthritis caused by age-related wear and tear on the bones and discs in the neck.

Symptoms

  • Cervical Spondylosis:
    • Neck pain, stiffness, and a limited range of motion.
    • Pain that travels to the shoulders and arms.
    • Headaches, especially at the back of the head.
